Quick exit

Leaves this site immediately for a neutral page. Also triggered by pressing Escape 3 times. This does not erase browsing history already saved on this device, and does not stop monitoring software. See the privacy page for what this does and does not protect.

Privacy and safer browsing

What this site collects

Nothing that identifies you. There are no accounts, no comment system, and no cookies set by this site.

Requests to other companies

This site makes no requests to domains it does not control. In practice that means:

  • Typefaces are served from this domain, not from a font CDN.
  • There are no social sharing widgets, embedded posts, or video players that phone home before you click.
  • There are no advertising networks and no retargeting pixels.

This is deliberate, and the reason is specific rather than general. Third-party requests are what let advertising follow a reader between sites. An ad for a domestic violence resource appearing later on a shared computer is an exposure risk, and no amount of useful functionality is worth creating it.

Analytics

This site currently runs no analytics of any kind.

The quick exit button, and what it does not do

The “Quick exit” control in the corner of every page leaves this site immediately for a weather site. You can also press Esc three times. It replaces the current page rather than adding to your history, so the Back button will not return you here.

It is important to understand its limits. This button:

  • does not erase browsing history that your browser has already written,
  • does not clear pages already saved in your browser’s cache,
  • does not affect history synced to another device on the same account,
  • does not defeat monitoring or parental-control software, which records activity before it ever reaches your browser’s history.

If someone has installed software on your device, or can see your account activity, this button will not protect you. A device you control, or a public computer, is safer than clearing traces on a device you share.

The National Network to End Domestic Violence maintains practical, current guidance on technology safety at techsafety.org. That is a better resource on this subject than we could write, and it is kept up to date.
